"The Sun"

If you think about it, a sunset is the most unique, fleeting and precious thing on earth.

It’s like a snowflake.  Each one is different, and only lasts a few minutes. If you fail to capture it, it's gone forever. No one else will see it the way you saw it, from that exact spot. Ever again.

When we gaze at the sun going down, it captivates and awakens something deep within us, and we feel the same awe as our prehistoric ancestors gathered around a fire.  It creates a spark inside our minds, and awakens a primitive part of the soul, one that we are born with and forget we even have. This is our connection to nature. Our umbilical cord to Mother Earth. It also makes us feel old and wise, and reminds us that we are just about as permanent as the clouds in the sky. Our lives will fade and die just like the sun, and vanish into the earth to be born again some day.

If you think about it, the sun is a miracle in itself.   Isn't it amazing how a ball of gas 93 million miles away can heat our backs and make stuff grow? And give us a sunburn? That it can affect radio signals?  And scorch the Earth in some places, and not in others?

You know if the sun exploded right...now... and we were all gonna die,  we wouldn't know it for the next 8 minutes?  Isn't it amazing that a naturally occurring nuclear fusion reaction can produce seemingly infinite energy, and sustain itself for billions of years?

Isn't it a miracle that something that occurs naturally, with all our technology, is impossible to duplicate on any scale by any means we have discovered?  That it can provide all the energy needs to sustain life for freaking FOREVER,  and the most we can do is create a tiny explosion that can level a city or a reactor that melts down and poisons the land for decades?

Isn't it cool to think that we, all carbon based life forms on our planet, our planet itself, all the elements on the Periodic Table and everything else in the universe are the product of suns exploding billions of years ago?

Isn't all this stuff cool in a way that is impossible to explain?

Something like that, a spark in an infinite void that can burn for so long and power a solar system...and the fact that our planet is the right distance and has exactly the right conditions to sustain life...I think is proof that some sort of a God exists.

Why do you think the ancient Egyptians worshiped the sun as their God? Because it dies every day and is reborn. It gives life, it makes things grow and sustains us, and fills so many of our needs. It stays up in the sky all day and watches over us. It illuminates the darkest corners of the earth and of our minds, and brings us out of darkness and ignorance. It destroys our fear of the unknown. Isn't that what God is supposed to do?

Maybe "God" isn't a person, or one spirit. Maybe "God" is nature, and everything around us.  Maybe He's the world we live in. Maybe we're all just part of one big living, breathing organism. Maybe our trivial lives and daily rat races all add up to something. Maybe it will all mean something in the end.

All I know, is when I stare into the sun just before the day's gone, for that brief second amidst all my human pain and misery, I forget where I am and who I am.  I can take a deep breath and relax, and realize I'm happy to be alive.  Maybe I do have a part in the big picture.

Maybe we're actually part of a huge biological computer, running a 5 billion year program trying to find the meaning of life. The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.

Maybe that answer is a number. Maybe it's 42. Maybe not.

"A Four Letter Word"

Love by itself isn't anything. It's just a little word.  It doesn't really describe the feeling that you'll die without someone.  It doesn't describe the hole that is left in your being when that person leaves you for good.  It doesn't adequately describe the being of one body, one mind and one spirit with another human.  It doesn't describe the emptiness of your room and the coldness of your body at night without arms around it.  It doesn't describe the terrible burning that eats away at you from the inside, because you can't say or do the things you want when that person is around.  It doesn't describe a connection so deep it transcends reality in a way that cannot be explained. It's only little four letter word that people misuse all the time. Without an equal and opposite force to act upon it, it's nothing.
